Quality isn't just a matter of price
Giorgos Talantzis
Interview by Eleni Lazaridou
We welcomed to our offices the co-owner of the company SkioDomi and put 5 questions to him about his field.
Question 1
Do you remember your first customer? Not as a number, but as the feeling of a stranger trusting you for the very first time?
Giorgos
Of course I remember him. It wasn't just a job; it was the first time someone had trusted me to carry out my work, which for this particular customer meant installing an awning. When I visited the gentleman's house, I realised that this isn't purely a technical job; in the end, you also have to convey responsibility and trustworthiness. I remember being extremely anxious about whether everything would go well. I couldn't wait for him to see the result of my efforts and to see on his face that he was satisfied. The outcome? He liked my work very much and thanked me for it, and I finally felt relief.
Question 2
What advice would you give to a young person who wants to start a technical business in Greece?
Eleni Lazaridou · 5 Stigmes
I notice that most young people are usually employees. As a young man who runs a business in the technical sector, what advice would you give?
Giorgos
Specifically, lately I've noticed that there is demand for technical work, and I expect that to continue in the future. In the technical trades, as I imagine in every sector, it's important to build a name and a reputation, to do your job properly and, above all, to be honest with the customer, because that is partly what reveals your quality. Something I believe is important, especially at the start, is to try to keep your prices competitive compared with the rest of your sector, so that you can begin to gain experience and build a client base. Also, don't forget to keep studying the trends in your field, because new things are constantly coming out that you can apply in your own work too.
Question 3
Has the way you see your work changed since you became a father? Have you perhaps become more careful about safety and functionality?
Giorgos
The way I approach my work has certainly changed. I really have become more careful and I think about safety much more now, because first and foremost I need to be well myself in order to provide for my family, both financially and socially.
Eleni Lazaridou · 5 Stigmes
So would you say you have more motivation now? Do you wake up with more appetite for your daily routine?
Giorgos
Definitely, yes. Whatever I do, I always think about my little girl's future, so that she is secure on every level.
Question 4
What is the biggest "lie" people believe about the construction sector in Greece?
Giorgos
Perhaps that it's simply an easy job because you're applying technical knowledge, which is in no way the case, as is the public's perception that "it's all just a matter of price". In reality, the price is shaped by expertise, materials, a proper study and assessment of each customer's needs, and also by professionalism, which starts with communication and ultimately ends in the working relationship with the customer. You can hand the job to the cheapest person out there, but are you sure about the quality of the materials? Or their willingness to genuinely fix the problem you have, rather than simply "covering it up" temporarily so that it reappears in the future? Let's not forget that repairing the same things over and over again costs, in the long run, both time and money…
Question 5
How much responsibility do you feel when you enter someone's home? After all, the customer is letting you into their most personal space; it isn't just a worksite.
Giorgos
When someone opens their home to you, you certainly carry a huge responsibility, because they are entrusting you with something very sensitive: their living environment, their family's environment, which you become part of too, even if only temporarily; at least that's how I feel. You have to be careful and treat their space with absolute respect. You have to be certain that the members of your staff you send are decent people who will be mindful of the customer's space, which is why you should check on them by going along with them on jobs. Essentially, you have to be sure, at all times, of the quality your company stands for. Visit the SkioDomi website
